Exploring the Process of Adaptive Analysis

Basic usage of the function

The function works only for a model which has been solved with adaptive solution option. Therefore, a model should be created and solved before starting this function. The basic usage of the function is described below.

Starting the function

This instructional function is initiated by choosing ˇ°Display Adaptive Processˇ± item from ˇ°FEM Simulationˇ± submenu of menu. The following few steps should be taken in order to start displaying the adaptive analysis process.

1) Create an initial model, and assign data necessary for adaptive analysis.

Create an initial model by mesh generation and assign material properties ,boundary conditions, and load conditions. The mesh will be refined or reshaped as the adaptive process goes on, but the assigned data remain as they are at the initial stage.
  2) Solve the model.

Solution should be obtained with setting the solution stage as "Adaptive Analysis". In "Analysis Options" dialog, "Keep all the intermediate models" option should also be turned on. Set the number of iteration cycles greater than or equal to 2.

3) Select ˇ°Display Adaptive Processˇ± item from ˇ°FEM Simulationˇ± submenu of menu.

Then, ˇ°Adaptive Processˇ± window pops up and shows the initial model at the beginning.

Controlling the display of adaptive process

The adaptive process can be displayed using the following controls provided in "Adaptive Process" window.

Popup menu : The popup menu contains items of data displayable as contour image. The last 2 items are the estimated error distribution expressed in energy error value and its ratio to the total strain energy.
Control buttons: There are 5 control buttons which control stepwise rendering of multi-step data.

- Stop button : Click this button to stop sequential stepwise rendering, i.e., animation of the adaptive process.

- Step backward button : Click this button to move one step backward in stepwise rendering. If animation is running, it will be terminated, and the play button automatically pops up.

    - Step forward button : Click this button to move one step forward in stepwise rendering. If animation is running, it will be terminated, and the play button automatically pops up.

- Play button : Click this button to start animating stepwise rendering . Then, this button looks pressed like , and stepwise animation goes on.

    - Playback button : If this button is not pressed, animation terminates at the last step. But, if this button is pressed like , animation continues backward, when the animation reaches the frame of the last step.

- "Record animation" button : If this button is pressed like , the animation image is recorded while animation is running. (This function is not working in the current version of VisualFEA.)

- "Render by mesh" button : If this button is pressed like , the adaptive process is expressed by mesh.

- "Render by contour" button : If this button is pressed like , the adaptive process is expressed by contour.

- "Render by mesh and contour" button : If this button is pressed like , the adaptive process is expressed by mesh and contour.

Ending the display of adaptive process

This function of displaying the adaptive process is terminated by closing "Adaptive Process" window, or starting any other menu command.
